Ilubirin: mangroves in Lagos

Mangroves at Ilubirin

Lagos in Nigeria is currently the fastest growing city on earth. Around the lagoon, a city of over 25 million people is expanding rapidly and is estimated to reach over 80 million inhabitants at the end of this century, becoming the world’s biggest city. Visiting today’s Lagos is fascinating and worrying at the same time. Traffic is not moving, air pollution gives a soar throat and plastic waste is covering streets and shores.

The most surprising was to discover in the heart of Lagos, along the shore of Lagos Island, the promising sight of young mangrove trees. During a site visit for the situation analysis of a wetland park design, we saw it in the shallow waters just outside the fence. Strengthening the hope that we can enhance the potential of the Lagos lagoon to create a robust balance with nature in this severe urban environment.

DASUDA and CDR International are working for FIDC on the development of the Ilubirin site in Lagos, Nigeria. VE-R makes the landscape design for the wetland park in the DASUDA team.
